‘Rice & Chocolate’

Outreach

Food insecurity continues to touch communities globally. In the Philippines, high prices and low income prevent many from affording sufficient amounts of staple items such as rice and bread for their families.

As a young married and farming couple, Diego and Elnora actively found ways to help those around them. Taking rice and produce from their farm, they gave to neighbors and relatives in need. Additionally the Veluz’ assisted community members by paying medical bills and footing college tuition for local students.

The Veluz’ moved to the United States in the late 1970’s. Nevertheless, from their modest earnings they continued to support their beloved hometown in Luisiana. Elnora passed away in 1991, but Diego pressed on with their mission work.

After being forced to retire at the golden age of 90, Diego returned to being hands-on in his efforts. Twice a year, he travelled back to the Philippines visiting one barrio/barangay at a time where he gifted bags of rice until his physical strength no longer served him. He was 100 years old when the world was devastated by impacts of COVID-19. Yet, every Spring and even throughout the pandemic, Diego was determined bags of rice and other essential items would be made available to those in need. To date, thousands of kilos of rice have made it to homes all throughout Luisiana and surrounding communities. And the chocolates? The Hershey nuggets from Costco have always been a favorite.

In June of 2022, just four months shy of his 102nd birthday, Diego Juacalla Veluz transitioned.

As a Foundation, we are grateful to continue Diego and Elnora’s work in providing food through our “Rice & Chocolate” Outreach Program to communities navigating through food insecurities.
